About Hogenakkal Falls

Hogenakkal Falls is one of South India’s most scenic natural attractions, located near the Tamil Nadu–Karnataka border. The name Hogenakkal comes from Kannada words “Hoge” (smoke) and “Kal” (rocks) — meaning “Smoky Rocks”, referring to the mist that rises when water crashes against carbonatite rocks.

The falls are formed by the Kaveri River, which splits into multiple streams before plunging down rocky cliffs. The area is geologically significant because the rocks here are among the oldest carbonatite rocks in South Asia.

The main highlight is the coracle ride, where local boatmen row circular boats through narrow gorges and around the waterfalls. The region is also known for:

Medicinal baths (locals believe the water has healing properties)

Fresh river fish stalls

Scenic viewpoints and rocky landscapes

During monsoon, the falls become extremely powerful and majestic, while in summer the flow reduces but boating continues safely (depending on water level).
