LakeChilika Lake is a massive brackish water lagoon located along the eastern coast of India in Odisha, connected to the Bay of Bengal. Covering an area of around 1,100 square kilometers, the lake spreads across Puri, Khordha, and Ganjam districts.
The lake is recognized as a Ramsar Wetland Site due to its ecological importance. It is home to over 160 species of birds, including migratory birds from Siberia, Russia, and Central Asia during winter. The lake also hosts the rare Irrawaddy dolphin, which attracts thousands of tourists every year.
Chilika Lake contains several small islands such as Nalabana Island, Kalijai Island, Honeymoon Island, and Breakfast Island. Nalabana Island is declared a bird sanctuary, and during winter months, it becomes a paradise for birdwatchers.
Fishing communities around the lake depend on it for livelihood, and Chilika is also one of the largest inland fisheries in India. Tourists usually explore the lake through boat rides from Satapada, Barkul, Rambha, and Balugaon.
Because of its scenic beauty, wildlife diversity, and peaceful environment, Chilika Lake is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Odisha.
